![]() Wearable devices such as smartwatches offer exciting new opportunities for users to interact with their applications. In summary, assistive technologies have not made the jump into the era of ubiquitous access, and multiple, inconsistent screen readers create new practical problems for users with visual impairments. The study also identifies several accessibility needs, such as uniformity of navigational experience across devices, and recommends potential solutions. Among the findings, the study shows that, even for remote desktop access - an early forerunner of true ubiquitous access - screen readers are too limited, if not unusable. Towards that, the paper presents a user study with 21 visually-impaired participants, specifically involving the switching of screen readers within and across different computing platforms, and the use of screen readers in remote access scenarios. This paper investigates whether technologies like screen readers have kept pace with, or have created a barrier to, the trend toward ubiquitous access, with a specific focus on desktop computing as this is still the primary way computers are used in education and employment. In the era of personal computing, users with visual impairments required special-purpose, assistive technologies, such as screen readers, to interact with computers. Ubiquitous access is an increasingly common vision of computing, wherein users can interact with any computing device or service from anywhere, at any time. Sinter's latency is low enough for practical use, even over a relatively slow network connection. Sinter's IR-level programming model facilitates development of accessibility features and other enhancements, transparently to the remote application and reader. Sinter supports low-bandwidth, remote access to a wide range of applications, including Microsoft Word and Apple Mail, with both Windows and OS X clients and servers, as well as a web browser client. In the example above, Sinter allows a Mac-only reader to read remote Windows applications. The Sinter IR encapsulates platform-specific accessibility code on the remote system, facilitates development of additional accessibility features, and is simple enough to be reconstructed and read on any client platform. ![]() Sinter addresses these problems with a platform-independent intermediate representation (IR) of a remote application's user interface (UI). ![]() This paper describes a framework, called Sinter, that efficiently and seamlessly supports remote, cross-platform screen reading, without modifying the application or the screen reader. The only current option is to run a different screen reader on each platform, which harms productivity. These users' productivity depends on features of a specific screen reader, and readers are locked-in to a specific OS. Current remote access protocols do not work well with screen readers, creating a disproportionate burden for users with visual impairments. For instance, a Mac user may access a cloud-based Windows remote desktop to run an application required for her job. Computer users commonly use applications designed for different operating systems (OSes). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Griswold cast iron foundry was based in Erie, Pennsylvania and until the early 1900s, cast-iron items from this company were marked with an "ERIE" logo. įounded as the Seldon and Griswold Manufacturing Company, the Griswold company became known as the premier manufacturer of high-quality cast-iron kitchen items in the United States. ViolinĪnother eight-shaped instrument, violins share similar characteristics to but are much smaller than acoustic guitars. What makes electric guitars different is their application of magnetic pickups that converts vibration into an electric signal that travels through an amplifier. They have varying thicknesses to produce different sounding notes.Īcoustics are often hollow and wooden where as electric guitars are solid wood. Whether acoustic or electric, the strings are the same length and made of metal or nylon. There are two kinds of guitars that provide sound from their body: an acoustic resonant chamber or amplification by electronic means. The plucking or strumming comes from the dominant hand while the opposite hand presses down the frets and strings on its neck. GuitarĪ guitar is a stringed instrument from the Lute family shaped like a figure eight. Tuning is the act of loosening or tightening strings to the proper notes for optimal sound. For an instrument to play well and according to standard notes, it must undergo tuning. They have strings that affix to opposing ends of the instrument across a flat face. String instruments come in classifications of families, with the most common being the Lute, Violin and Lyre. The body is an enclosed or hollowed chamber made of a material that will resonate to produce a unique sound for each individual instrument. Thick strings will sound very deep compared to those that are thinner, where the sound is tiny and high.Īn instrument’s body size, structure and material also affect the quality, volume and projection of sound. Tighter, shorter strings create quicker, higher pitched tones while longer, looser strings create lower, drawn-out ones. How Strings & Body Affect SoundĪ string’s length, thickness and tension are what produce various tones from the instrument. Here the sound also vibrates and resonates with the air inside. Upon manipulation of the string, the vibration transfers into the body of the instrument. The manipulation, or bending and pressing, or the strings furthers the sound by elongating or shortening the effect. But, things like bows, allow for a very long and sustained vibration with a beautiful dynamic not easily created with other implements.Ī musician can play strings individually, indicating one note succeeded by another, or strum together to produce multiple simultaneous sounds in a chord. Picks, plectrums, fingers and hammer-like objects make a single, brief sound. This excitation happens when a person uses a pick, plectrum, bow, their fingers or some other implement to strike a string or to strum several strings.Įach implement creates a different effect on the vibration produced. To play a note of music is the act of exciting vibrations from different strings. ![]() The combination of materials that comprise an instrument is what delivers the sound unique to each. The growing number of gammaherpesviruses in the MCFV group presents a challenge to diagnosticians and researchers. These include expansion of the MCF virus (MCFV) group, current diagnostic assays, recognition of additional susceptible species, MCF in pigs, an MCF-like syndrome in sheep, current thoughts about pathogenesis, and prospects for an effective vaccine. 159 In a failed effort at brevity, we underscore more recent developments about MCF. 42,122 Although published almost 30 years ago, a chapter written by Dr Walter Plowright remains insightful and comprehensive. 4,9,175,183 Some of the older literature addresses MCF before the 1900s. Your veterinarian can give you more specific advice about feeding based on your snake's individual requirements. Female snakes approaching breeding season can be fed more frequently. Smaller or younger snakes usually eat twice each week, while larger, more mature snakes typically eat once every week or two. That all depends on your snake’s age, size, and activity level. You do not have to kill the prey yourself, as most pet stores will supply freshly killed or frozen rodents to feed. Snakes can be offered either thawed, previously frozen prey, or freshly killed ones. It is more humane for the prey and safer for the snake. Snakes should be trained to eat dead prey. Even a small mouse can bite and severely injure a pet snake by inducing a severe potentially life-threatening infection from the bite. Live prey should not be fed to snakes, as the prey will not only suffer psychological stress while being hunted by the snake, but also threaten to harm the snake by biting it before they are eaten. If you are squeamish about feeding rodents to your snake, even though they are now commercially available already dead and frozen, and all you have to do is thaw and offer them to the snake, a snake is probably not the pet for you!
